Training

Training weekends are held approximately every 4 weeks through most of the year.

Training involves:

-Stages of Training
-Helicopter Familiarisation
-Snow and Avalanche Work
-Assessment

       Are you interested in becoming a Search Dog handler?

Any person interested in becoming a SARDA dog handler must satisfy the following criteria before they will be considered.

  • Be able to demonstrate that they are active members of a mountain rescue team, which is recognised by The Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland, or, where such a team is not active, have at least 2 years current or recent mountain rescue experience.
  • They should have a favourable reference/recommendation, in writing, regarding their hill ability from their current or most recent mountain rescue team leader.
  • A current mountaineering C.V. will be provided to the Training Officer by their second weekend.
  • They attend the first weekend as an introduction. After their next three weekends, they will be told if they can continue to train with SARDA Scotland. If they do not demonstrate sufficient potential, no further assistance will be given. (No reasons need be given).
  • After first three weekends they must attend 75% of training weekends up to qualifying as a full dog team.
