Annual Assessment

The Annual Training and Assessment Course of the Search and Rescue Dog Association Scotland takes place in Glencoe at the end of March.   Detailed arrangements are available at the time but the course will cover the following:

Helicopter familiarisation for potential handlers and dogs
Dog familiarisation with pyrotechnics
Livestock Test.
Snow burials and avalanche work if conditions permit.
Wilderness searching.

There will be assessors from England/Lakes.

A number of dog /  handlers going from potential novice to novice dog handler and going from novice to full search dog handler are put through their paces over the three days..

The Kingshouse and Glencoe is a perfect place to run the assessment weekend with a variety of possible search locations.

sheep test tom

A critical part of the assessment weekend is the stock test. A shepherd assesses each dogs reaction to the sheep. If the dog look likely to worry the sheep then it would be an automatic course fail. The dogs will be used anywhere and chasing after live stock just is not allowed to happen.

The dogs are also exposed to the sight and sounds of flares which may be used for real on a callout.
