2007 Assessment
allison & midge2007

Alison and Search Dog ‘Midge’ being put through their paces at the annual SARDA Scotland’s assessment weekend held from the 23rd to the 25th March 2007.

The weekend started on the Thursday with all dogs being stock tested by a local shepherd to ensure they will never worry any livestock on the hill.

There are three locations for the assessments, Glen Etive, White Corries and Black Corries. Each location has two search areas with two ‘casualties’ in each area. The handlers are allocated a search area by the assessors. Depending on the wind the handler and dog then search the area to locate the ‘casualties’.

There were two external assessors this year from SARDA Lakes who, along with SARDA Scotland’s own assessors, looked at each of the search dog teams over the three days of the assessment.

On Friday and Saturday the search dog teams completed three searches, one in each of the three areas. Glen Etive and the White Corrie areas are typical Glencoe areas with steep rocky ground, the Black Corries is a more open moor land with bogs and heather knolls. On Sunday morning each team completed one search, and in the afternoon the successful search dog teams were presented with their certificates.

All of the dogs excelled over the weekend. Jimmy Simpson commented that he thought the dogs were of a very high standard and he was very impressed.

On Friday night the search dog teams experienced the sound, smell and sight from a variety of flares. This helps to familiarise the dogs with what can be a very frightening experience for them.
