Failte Don Apainn  (Welcome to Appin).

To most folk Appin is just a small village straddling the A828 midway between Oban and FortWilliam. Those of you who have read ‘Kidnapped’ by Robert Louis Stevenson will be aware that the story is based around the events of the murder of ‘The Red Fox’ – Colin Campbell of Glen Ure in 1752, and the subsequent hanging if an innocent man - James Stewart (James of the Glen) who was found guilty of being art and part of the murder plot. The main suspect, Alan Breck Stewart fled into the hills and his character features largely in Stevenson’s novel.

There are several places to visit which commemorate this bleak time in Scottish history including, The Murder Cairn and James of the Glen’s birthplace (Duror) and the site of the execution of James of the Glen (Ballachulish).

Why not stay at a local bed and breakfast and explore the area.

Take a step back in time and follow the old hill paths through Glen Stockdale to Duror, or Glen Creran to Ballachulish. On the Glen Stockdale walk there are the remains of an old settlement which include a fine example of a corn-drying kiln.

Caves in the limestone provided shelter for clansmen evading government troops following the rout at Culloden in 1752.

Loch Creran and Loch Linnhe provide the playground for those wishing to take to the water and are ever popular with canoeists, sailors and fishermen.

There are two ‘Munro’s’ in the immediate area – Beinn Sgulaird (3074ft/937m) and Beinn Fhionnlaidh (3146ft/959m), and a number of  smaller hills which are well worth visiting for the views stretching along the west coast from Ben Nevis to the Paps  of Jura.
